How to Choose a Web Developer in Mauritius

Most businesses in Mauritius hire a web developer once every four or five years, and usually with no way to judge whether the person in front of them is any good. The quotes look similar, the portfolios look similar, and the difference only shows up eighteen months later when you need a change made and nobody answers.

This guide sets out what to ask, how the options genuinely differ, and which answers should make you walk away.

What does a web developer in Mauritius actually do?

A web developer builds and maintains the site itself: the templates, the content system, the forms, the hosting setup and the performance work. That is distinct from a web designer, who decides how it looks and how it is laid out. Many independents in Mauritius do both, but you should ask rather than assume.

The distinction matters when something breaks. A designer who subcontracted the build cannot fix a server error, and a developer who never saw the design rationale will quietly undo it.

Freelancer, agency, or overseas team?

For most small and medium Mauritian businesses a local freelancer is the best fit: direct contact with the person doing the work, no account-manager layer, and someone in your timezone. Agencies suit larger budgets and multi-person campaigns. Overseas marketplaces are the cheapest upfront and often the most expensive to maintain.

None of these is wrong. The failure mode is choosing on price alone and discovering that the cheapest option priced the build and not the five years that follow it.

What should a website cost in Mauritius?

There is no standard price, because a website covers everything from a five-page brochure to a booking platform. What moves the number is scope rather than page count: custom design versus a template, how many systems it must talk to, whether the content and photography already exist, and who maintains it afterwards.

Be suspicious of any quote given before those questions are asked. A number produced without a scope is a number that will change.

Which platform should you use?

WordPress is still the sensible default for most Mauritian businesses: mature, easy to hand over, and inexpensive to host. Headless WordPress and Next.js earn their extra cost when speed, integrations or scale genuinely demand it. The useful question is not which platform is best, but which is right for this project.

Why speed matters more than it looks

Speed is the one quality factor you can measure before you hire. Google's research found that when a page takes three seconds instead of one, the chance of a visitor leaving rises by 32 percent, and that 53 percent of mobile visits are abandoned when a page takes longer than three seconds to load.

That matters here more than it would elsewhere. DataReportal's Digital 2026 report put internet use in Mauritius at 79.5 percent of the population at the end of 2025, against 2.25 million active cellular connections, equivalent to 178 percent of the population. Your audience is overwhelmingly mobile, and mobile is where slow sites lose people.

Ask any developer to run their own recent work through a speed test in front of you. It takes a minute and it is very hard to fake.

Six questions to ask before you hire

• Who owns the code, the domain and the hosting account when we are done?
• Can I edit my own content without calling you?
• What happens if you are unavailable in six months?
• Is the domain registered in my name or yours?
• What is the plan for updates, backups and security?
• Can you show me a site you built that is still running well two years later?

The last one is the most revealing. Anyone can show you a launch. Far fewer can show you something that aged well.

Red flags

• They will not give you administrator access to your own site.
• The domain is registered in their name, not your business's.
• You are quoted a price before anyone asks what the site must do.
• There is no written scope, only a total.
• Every example in the portfolio launched in the last twelve months.

Do I need to hire someone based in Mauritius?

No, but a local developer understands the market, shares your timezone, and can meet you. For a business selling primarily to Mauritians, that context is worth more than a lower hourly rate.

What if I already have a site and only need it fixed?

Ask for an audit before any rebuild is proposed. Plenty of sites need a performance pass, a security update and better structure rather than replacement, and that is a far smaller piece of work.

Should I pay a deposit?

A deposit is normal, and somewhere near half is typical for a small project. What is not normal is paying the full amount upfront, or paying anything before a written scope exists.
